SCALE project releases new technical guideline for smart and bidirectional charging infrastructure

The 2Zero project SCALE has published a comprehensive new technical guideline to support the deployment of smart and bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This milestone document is designed to assist cities, utilities, and infrastructure providers in procuring and implementing charging systems that enable both efficient energy management and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities.

The guideline addresses key technical requirements and procurement best practices for charging stations that not only supply energy to EVs but can also feed electricity back to the grid. Such bidirectional chargers are essential for leveraging EV fleets as distributed energy resources, enhancing grid flexibility, and supporting renewable energy integration.

Developed through extensive research and stakeholder collaboration, the document provides clear recommendations on interoperability, communication protocols, cybersecurity, and technical standards. It also includes practical procurement guidelines to help public authorities and private operators make informed decisions aligned with future-proof smart grid objectives.

The guideline is available as a free downloadable resource, empowering decision-makers to accelerate the rollout of advanced charging infrastructure in line with Europe’s ambitious climate and energy goals.
