Discover GIANTS new Deliverable: D2.3. Paving the Way for Mass Adoption of Frugal EVs
The GIANTS project aims to close the current gap between existing L-category vehicles and M- and N1-category vehicles, offering users a solution that combines mission versatility with affordability. The GIANTS platform is being developed as a modular and scalable L-vehicle platform, specifically designed for mission-centric urban cargo and passenger transport in both emerging and advanced markets.
The project has recently released a new deliverable, “Paving the Way for Mass Adoption of Frugal EVs,” which establishes the first structured business model for the GIANTS platform. This deliverable also introduces an initial pricing framework and early policy recommendations.
The document provides guidance to support the mass adoption of frugal Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) solutions, laying the foundation for a robust business model that is aligned with both the platform’s technological ambitions and market realities. This strategic and technical consolidation sets the stage for the next phase of the project.
The deliverable defines a reference technological architecture and presents a comprehensive market analysis, including competitive benchmarking, an initial cost assessment, and a clearer evaluation of economic feasibility. While respecting confidentiality constraints, the aggregated results offer a realistic view of cost structures and competitiveness.
In addition, the deliverable examines pathways to improve cost competitiveness. In particular, it explores opportunities for cost reduction through design simplification and localisation of production, which are especially relevant for emerging markets such as India, where affordability is a key driver for large-scale adoption.
In parallel, the document sets out an initial approach to policy engagement and collaboration with cities, recognising their central role in enabling the uptake of frugal light electric vehicles. It highlights that stronger and more consistent market uptake will depend on clearer and more supportive policy signals for L-category vehicles at both EU and national levels.
In response, the deliverable describes the early steps taken by the consortium to define a pathway for structured policy dialogue and cooperation with cities in Europe and in emerging markets. It includes a first stakeholder mapping exercise and an initial set of policy recommendations, which together are intended to connect technological readiness with practical deployment conditions. This approach ensures that frugal LEVs, such as those developed within GIANTS, are positioned to make a tangible contribution to sustainable urban mobility
