The V2X Cluster: strengthening collaboration for connected and sustainable mobility
The V2X Cluster, launched in 2023 within the Horizon Europe framework, is growing! What started as a joint initiative among a few research projects has now become a dynamic network connecting SCALE, Drive2X, EV4EU, ePowerMove, FLOW, Neverflat, AHEAD, and XL-Connect, all working together to make connected and electric mobility more accessible, efficient and user-focused.
From the outset, the Cluster was designed to create bridges between projects, rather than let each one move in its own direction. The central idea is clear: vehicles should be able to exchange data directly with infrastructure, the energy grid and with each other. This level of interaction opens the door to safer journeys, smoother user experience and lower emissions.
Each project inside the Cluster brings its own specialisation. SCALE leads the work on smart charging and interoperability across systems. Drive2X tests large-scale demonstrations of vehicle-grid interaction. EV4EU focuses on decentralised control of electric fleets, while ePowerMove develops high-power charging solutions ready for mass deployment. FLOW investigates how connectivity can improve traffic flow; Neverflat works on battery resilience and longevity; AHEAD uses artificial intelligence to balance EV charging needs with grid capacity; and XL-Connect creates bridges between different communication standards across Europe.
After two years of activity, the Cluster is entering a new stage. It now has its own logo and brochure, giving a clearer identity and helping to communicate its goals and achievements to a wider audience. This step marks an important milestone in showing how collaboration between projects can turn shared research into real-world impact.
The network is also expanding. New projects are joining the Cluster, bringing in fresh ideas and expertise. This continuous growth reflects how essential cooperation has become to tackle broader issues like standardisation, cybersecurity, interoperability and user trust. The diversity of partners and topics makes the Cluster a living ecosystem that evolves alongside Europe’s mobility agenda.
Beyond research, the V2X Cluster acts as a meeting point between innovation and policy. It connects scientists, engineers, industry players and decision-makers, contributing to the European Commission’s vision of an integrated, intelligent and climate-neutral transport system.
