eBRT2030 Launch of the eBRT Demo in Amsterdam and User Group Insights

The eBRT2030 project marked a major milestone with the launch of its Amsterdam demonstration, advancing zero-emission, high-capacity public transport in Europe. The demo coincided with the seventh meeting of the Future eBRT Cities user group, bringing together regional authorities, operators, technology providers, and project partners to discuss the corridor’s electrification and sustainable mobility planning.

The Amsterdam metropolitan area, home to over 2.6 million people across its polycentric structure, relies heavily on Bus Rapid Transit line 300, connecting Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Schiphol Airport with roughly 340 daily trips. The demo focuses on electrifying this corridor and integrating innovative energy solutions. A hybrid charging system at the depots combines a limited grid connection with a 1 MWh battery buffer, smoothing peak demand and optimising charging schedules. Advanced load management dynamically allocates power among buses, ensuring efficient charging without overloading the grid.

The user group meeting highlighted how this smart charging ecosystem goes beyond fleet electrification. Strategies integrate bus schedules, driver operations, renewable energy availability, and day-ahead electricity market data, reducing costs and emissions. International exchange with urban planners from Gothenburg reinforced the importance of aligning transport and energy planning.

The Amsterdam demo demonstrates that high-frequency BRT corridors can operate sustainably and reliably while addressing grid constraints, setting a model for future eBRT deployments across Europe.
