Project Outcomes
First FLEXMCS deliverable now available online – D1.2 – “Business needs and mapping”

The transition to zero-emission heavy-duty transport in Europe requires not only technological innovation, but also a solid understanding of operational needs, stakeholder expectations and real deployment conditions. The FLEXMCS project contributes to this effort by supporting the rollout of Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) through flexible, scalable and interoperable solutions aligned with logistics realities.
A first important step in this direction is the publication of a key deliverable, which provides a strategic and technical foundation for the development of megawatt charging infrastructure across Europe. Based on extensive stakeholder engagement and analytical work, these reports help bridge the gap between policy ambitions and practical implementation.
Deliverable D1.2 identifies and analyses the business needs and requirements for planning, deploying and scaling flexible, multi-point MCS infrastructure. It draws on a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process, including a survey conducted in June 2025 with 53 organisations across Europe, as well as interviews and workshops involving logistics operators, Charging Point Operators, grid operators, site owners, OEMs and policymakers.
The analysis highlights how MCS deployment is strongly influenced by grid capacity, access to medium-voltage connections and permitting timelines, which remain key challenges. At the same time, it confirms the central role of depot charging, complemented by public and semi-public solutions for long-haul operations.
The report also points to the need for stronger coordination between logistics, energy and policy stakeholders, supported by improved planning and digital tools. By mapping these needs, D1.2 helps translate European policy frameworks, including the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), into concrete deployment pathways.
