eBRT2030 launched its innovative hybrid eBRT demonstration along the Syggrou corridor, in Athens
eBRT2030 has launched an innovative hybrid electric Bus Rapid Transit (eBRT) demonstration along the Syggrou corridor in Athens. The four-kilometre route connects the Fix metro station with the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center, one of the city’s busiest and most strategic transport corridors. The demonstration combines in-motion charging via overhead catenary lines with conventional depot-based electric charging to operate a new fleet of 18-metre articulated electric buses. The system builds on Athens’ existing trolleybus infrastructure, enabling efficient electrification while minimising the need for new fixed installations.
In addition to its charging concept, the eBRT system integrates advanced digital solutions to improve operational performance and passenger experience. These include 5G connectivity, real-time passenger information, digital twin tools for fleet management, and sensor-supported skip-stop operations aimed at reducing travel times and increasing service efficiency.
The Athens demonstration is led by ICCS, with the support of OSY, OASA, NTUA and TEMSA, and is fully aligned with the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Through strong multimodal integration and adaptive fleet scheduling, the pilot provides a scalable model for the deployment of electric bus systems and contributes to the decarbonisation of public transport while enhancing service quality.
