Initially supported by the H2020 EGVI funding programme (€8M), the Easily diStributed Personal RapId Transit (ESPRIT) project was designed to address the growing challenges of congestion, environmental impact, and the societal issues related to transportation in busy city centres and peri-urban areas.

The project envisioned two key use cases: a one-way car-sharing system for city centres and a last-mile personal mobility solution to link existing public transport networks in suburban areas. The innovative model involved a fleet of small vehicles that interlocked like a road train, creating a more efficient, flexible car-sharing system.

Building on the ESPRIT project’s success, the DRIVE22 project — funded under the EIT Climate KIC—expanded the vision further. This time, the multimodal concept was tested with 450 additional users, all showing strong interest in adopting this new solution. To increase market adoption, the system’s potential was presented to cities and transport operators, highlighting its significant advantages.

Since 2019, the ESPRIT initiative has evolved into METACAR Mobility Systems, a dynamic startup now on the verge of commercialising its groundbreaking mobility model, Kiwee.
